Various climatic models predict an increase in the ultraviolet (UV) radiation and a reduction in the precipitation levels reaching in the Mediterranean Basin. Exposure of plants to different levels of UV radiation and water availability could cause alterations on their physiology, development, reproduction and litter decomposition. Hence, the main objective of this thesis is to study the effects of UV (UV-A and UV-B) radiation and water availability on different Mediterranean species. The results of this thesis suggest that the reproduction of E. scoparia plants, as well as the decomposition of the leaf litter of A. unedo and P. angustifolia, can be affected by the increase in UV radiation and the reduction in rainfall. Specifically, UV-B radiation and drought could reduce flower size. In addition, the increase in UV-B radiation and drought could also reduce the decomposition rates of leaf litter, while the increase in UV-A radiation might stimulate litter photodegradation
