The participation of individuals and families in the context of the basic care services is dynamic and changing. Currently, increase the right to full citizenship. The aim of the article is to present and reflect about the forms of participation in the social service centers of Barcelona.Also, identify the variables that may affect the level of participation in the different phases of the accompaniment: exploration, social diagnosis, work plan and evaluation. It has been made a qualitative study, carried out by GRITS - Group for Innovation and Research in Social Work, of the University of Barcelona, in collaboration with the Barcelona City Council and the Generalitat de Catalunya. The field work counted with the collaboration of managers, professionals from basic social service centers and families cared for in socials centers. The analyzed narratives of the participants reveal the existence of a proportionality between “greater relationship with the professional - greater participation”. In addition, it has been possible to identify various variables (lack of time, lack of connection, unclear demands, feelings of guilt on the part of people, lack of records, etc.) that directly affect the level of participation in the different phases of the intervention process ​
