L'Eixample Malagrida d'Olot: urbanisme i arquitectura a la Catalunya-ciutat-jardí

Abstract

THE GARDEN CITY. This is the name under which Eixample Malagrida (the extension district) of the city of Olot is known; this is what it was called in the only plans available to us of the project that was born in the middle of Noucentisme and was promoted by the "Americano" from Olot Manuel Malagrida i Fontanet. The authorship of these plans is assigned to the city architects Joan Roca Pinet and Josep Esteve based on the signatures they make on the partial projects carried out by each of them in 1916 and 1925, respectively. However, can we consider the garden city model valid as the basis for the most important expansion project in the contemporary history of the city of Olot? And, furthermore, does its real authorship correspond only to these two names of the architects that signed the original plans?

Questioning these historical statements is two of the main guidelines that accompany our research and lead us to look into the life and work of the project’s founder, Manuel Malagrida. This is an immersive process that also brings us to the investigation of other aspects of the project, such as its formal radial arrangement and the solid references associated with it, or the political dimension of the apparently innocuous metaphor of the discovery of America related to the second phase of the work.

Beyond the historical or referential study of the project, this work addresses other issues of a more interpretative nature. On the one hand, we explore the personal space of those families living in the neighbourhood in its time of splendour -prior to the Civil War and the "Aigat" of 1940- with the aim of analysing the capacity of the architectural projects to generate a truly domestic architecture, beyond style or conventions. And, finally, we reclaim the efficiency and sensitivity of Olot's Eixample Malagrida in terms of its contribution to reconfiguring the urban, natural and social landscape in which it is embedded

LA CIUTAT JARDÍ. Així és com es coneix l’Eixample Malagrida de la ciutat d’Olot perquè d’aquesta manera s’anomena en els únics plànols que coneixem d’aquest projecte nascut en ple noucentisme i promogut per l’“americano” i olotí de naixement Manuel Malagrida i Fontanet. Aquests plànols assignen l’autoria del pla als llavors arquitectes municipals Joan Roca Pinet i Josep Esteve a través de la signatura que fan dels projectes parcials realitzats per cadascun d’ells als anys 1916 i 1925 respectivament. Però, podem donar per vàlid el model de ciutat jardí com a base del projecte de creixement més important de la història contemporània de la ciutat d’Olot? I, encara més, la seva autoria real es correspon amb els dos únics noms que signen els plànols originals?

La posada en dubte d’aquestes afirmacions històriques són dues de les directrius principals que acompanyen la nostra investigació i que ens condueixen a aprofundir en la vida i obra del seu Fundador, Manuel Malagrida. Es tracta d’un procés immersiu que també ens porta a investigar d’altres vessants del projecte, com ara la seva disposició formal radial i els sòlids referents que duu associats o la dimensió política de l’aparentment innòcua metàfora de la descoberta d’Amèrica associada a la segona fase de l’obra.

Més enllà de l’estudi històric o referencial del projecte, aquest treball encara d’altres temàtiques de caire més interpretatiu. D’una banda, furguem en la intimitat d’aquelles famílies residents en el barri en la seva època. d’esplendor –prèvia a la Guerra Civil i a l’”Aigat” de 1940– amb l’objectiu d’analitzar la capacitat dels seus projectes arquitectònics de generar una arquitectura veritablement domèstica, més enllà de l’estil o de les convencions. I, finalment, reivindiquem l’eficàcia i la sensibilitat de l’Eixample Malagrida d’Olot pel que fa a la seva contribució a reconfigurar el paisatge urbà, natural i social en el qual s’insereix
