The Confused Pilgrim (Góngora, Soledades, 1613, vv. 1-4).The present study sheds light on the debate on the Dedicatoria al duque de Béjar (Luis de Góngora, Soledades, 1613: “Steps of a wandering pilgrim are these”), which is undoub-tedly the most ambitious overture of Hispanic Baroque. Its main contention is how the lessons of most critics –ranging from Andrés Almansa y Mendoza, José de Pellicer, Gar-cía de Salcedo Coronel, Francisco de Cabrera (“anónimo antequerano”), Martín Váz-quez Siruela and, more recently, Dámaso Alonso, Herman Brunn, Leo Spitzer, Maurice Molho, Robert Jammes, Antonio Carreira, Nadine Ly, John Beverley, Mercedes Blanco, Joaquín Roses, Juan Matas, Crystal Chemris, Mary M. Gaylord, Gaspar Garrote and Paola Encarnación Sandoval– allow us to keep on linking the poet with the wandering pilgrim in the poem, the dedicator with the philosopher-shepherd from the first Solitu-de, the steps with the verses and, lastly, the sylva with the silva ​
