Pregnancy is a stage that marks a women’s life, as it represents a unique and
vital experience. Nevertheless, this experience involves some risks as well as the
obvious benefits. Therefore, these risks need to be assessed by each woman,
according with her thoughts, values and own interests, as well as those of her
family.
The World Health Organization recognises the importance of women and families
actively taking part in the decision-making process in relation with the treatments
they receive during labour; and it also recognises their right to choose the place
where they want to give birth.
Home childbirth in low-risk women, and always attended by professional
midwives, is as valid of an option as hospitalized birth. In addition, this alternative
birth process is more satisfying for women. Therefore, it’s fundamental to inform
and empower women so they can make their own informed decisions from the
different options as to where to give birth and also that they know the health
criteria and necessary surroundings in which to carry out a home childbirth.
Water birth as an alternative to the traditional childbirth is a practice that is gaining
popularity in several countries around the world. This results from the fact that
there are many benefits for the child and the mother. For this reason, the present
study has as a principal aim, the analysis of the ongoing scientific evidence
regarding this topic
