This article aims to reinterpret the modernist movement in Catalonia from an European perspective and the assumption that modernism is a distinctive movement of the 'second cities' of Europe in the late nineteenth century to achieve political prominence in a given state and in front of the respective capitals. The case of Barcelona, modernist city par excellence, is emblematic of the process of construction through symbolic and cultural elements of an alternative capitality to Madrid that will have important political consequences. The literary image of Barcelona as a 'rebellious city' responds to a large extent to this dynamic ​
