Introduction:
The effects of excessive sun exposure and ultra-violet radiation on people’s skin
are known, such as sunburn in short-term. Also, premature skin aging and skin
cancer are long-term illnesses. These health problems are increasing
considerably since sunbathing became a habit with crowding beaches and beliefs
about the benefits of being exposed to sunlight. That is why beach workers like
water lifeguards are not excluded. This group is bound to remain in this
environment all summer long, making them vulnerable to sun exposure so it is
advisable to know if they are properly protected.
The objective of this project is to know the sun exposure habits of beach
lifeguards in Blanes (Girona province, Spain), and with the data obtained,
evaluate if from a nursing point of view, it is necessary to invest resources in
interventions in health education and help them to improve their health.
Methods:
A descriptive, cross-sectional and observational study will be carried out, taking
a non-probabilistic sample of all the 25 lifeguards who are working in the beach
service of Blanes. After obtaining the approval of the manager of the lifeguard
service and once signed the informed consent of the participants, they will answer
an specific online survey prepared for this project during the first week of August
2020, which will measure sociodemographic variables, sun exposure habits, sun
protection practices, attitudes, knowledge and reflections, which will be analysed
quantitatively using the IMB SPSS v26 program
