Second language teaching is not an undemanding occupation. Teachers dedicated to this field must have knowledge of the teaching materials, the students and the content, which they work with. Moreover, teachers must investigate them in order to anticipate and assess everything related to the design of the class. Learning a foreign language could be an intricate process and the difficulties might increase when treating specialized languages, for example medical or legal language. For this reason, this dissertation offers a contrastive analysis between English and Spanish on six frequent lexical units of the legal discipline: under, termination, agreement, court, otherwise and where. The aim of this investigation is to help in predicting possible mistakes made by English speakers while learning legal Spanish. The chosen lexical units undergo a process called “split”, which means that their meaning have one form in English and two in Spanish. This “split” process is analyzed in the present dissertation with a focus on teaching legal Spanish to English native speakers
