The main topic of this doctoral research is the French artist Balthus (1908-2001) and the analysis
of his pictorial production. Despite being a notorious and much discussed painter by a theorical
corpus who have been limited their analysis on the proper art critic tecnicisms or on the
moralists, there’s still scanty researches about the artist in Spanish language. This thesis
examines the paradoxical dialectics established between a figurative representation and the
cunning ficcionality of the contents that the artist introduces in his painting, through a reading
and transverse exegeses of Balthus artworks, that articulates thematic and conceptual elements.
To understand what gives us to see and what we must see in the images created by Balthus, this
monograph crosses his artistic path and raises a theoretical synthesis that includes technical,
stylistic, iconographic, symbolic and relational questions, with the purpose of reinterpreting and
revaluing Balthus painting and reframing his repercussion inside contemporary art imaginary
