After the death of Jacint Verdaguer, the
writer Louis-Xavier de Ricard published
a long obituary in the most influential
press of Paris. Ricard, fanatically anticlerical
and a libertarian, commented on
the priest-poet from Folgueroles, which
upset the active elements of conservative
Catalan nationalism. From the resulting
censure that they imposed on him, Ricard
would abandon the cause that had turned
him into one of the leading international
activists of early Catalan nationalism
