Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is a public health problem on a global scale that
demands the health professional attention due to the high morbidity, mortality
and health cost it represents. The World Health Organization has stated that it
has to be eradicated and, therefore, social, economic and public health policies
must have this objective.
The Primary Care Centers provide a privileged place for nurses to prevent,
detect and attend cases of GBV that come to them. In addition, they allow the
continuity of care, the necessary accompaniment and the coordination in
network with other suitable resources.
Studies show how nurses face barriers that prevent them from effectively
intervening GBV. In practice, they face concerns, including feelings of
inadequate competence, at the time of screening and doing the necessary
intervention. The studies emphasize the importance of introducing GBV training
in the curriculum of future nurses. For this reason, it is important to find out what
knowledge base they rely on, what attitudes and abilities they show in practice
and what difficulties the professionals find when it comes to detecting and
dealing with cases, in order to design a training that is adaptated to the
pertinent needs.
Objectives: 1. Evaluate the perception of Primary Care nurses regarding their
knowledge, attitudes, abilities, experience and training received regarding GBV
when it comes to preventing, detection and interference, and analyzing possible
differences according to age, sex, professional experience and the Basic Health
Area. 2. Identify the barriers that prevent Primary Care nurses from preventing,
detecting and intervening GBV.
Material and methods: cross-sectional and mixed study: quantitative-
qualitative. The study population is the nurses of the five Primary Care Centers
in the city of Girona. This is a sample of convenience. The instrument used in
the quantitative part of the study is a questionnaire that incorporates the
Perception of nursing students about couples’ violence. The qualitative part of
the study will be carried under the phenomenological approach through two
focus groups consisting of 8-10 nurses each.
The results of this study will allow us to detect the need for improvement of the
above-mentioned aspects and to design educative programs adapted to these
detected necessities to be included in nursing studies so that it will train the
future nurses in order to improve the prevention, detection and intervention of
GBV
