There are many ways to live and to pay for
a war. The Carles, one of the main
agricultural landowners of the region of
Girona in the nineteenth century, lived the
Napoleonic War both on the battle field
and behind the front. In this article, they
serve as an example to show that, even if a
war effects all social groups, the more
well-off classes had strategies to reduce
the economic impact on their patrimonial
wealth
