Ru(II) aqua complex, containing the bidentate ligand Phen and the tridentate ligand Trpy-Me. This compound has been synthesized with the intention of characterize it and test its efficiency and selectivity as a catalyst for the photocatalytic oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols under mild conditions.
Initially, the non-commercial N-donors ligands (Trpy-Me) was synthesized in a 3-step synthetic route from 2-pyridyltri(n-butyl)stannane and 3,5-dibromopyridine following the methodology described in the bibliography.
The synthesis of the Ru catalyst has been carried out by two different synthetic routes that differ in the sequence coordination of the bidentate and tridentate ligands. Both routes start by [RuCl2(dmso)4] and lead to the Ru chloro-complex. The aqua complex is easily obtained by keeping at reflux in water. The spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization allowed identifiying all the intermediate compounds formed in the different synthetic routes such as chlorido and aqua complexes.
Finally, the catalytic activity of the aqua complex has been evaluated in the photocatalytic oxidation of four alcohol substrates (primary and secondary), obtaining better conversion values for the primary alcohols and higher selectivities for the corresponding ketone in secondary alcohols
