dc.description.abstract
In this final project different synthetic routes have been followed to obtain new ruthenium (II) complexes. These compounds have been synthesized with the intention of characterizing them completely so that their potential as anti-tumor can be evaluated.
The synthesis of two families of ruthenium compounds is described. On the one hand, compound [RuIICl2(DMSO)2(bpy-Cl2)] [2] has been synthesized from [RuII(DMSO)4Cl2] in the presence of the bpy-Cl2 ligand. This compound has two chlorido ligands, two DMSO ligands and a symmetric ligand bpy-Cl2, being thus an octahedral complex. In this case the synthesis is carried out using two synthetic routes, one of which results in a mixture of isomers cis-Cl, cis-DMSO-[2] and cis-Cl, trans-DMSO-[2] , and the other one gave rise to a single isomeric cis-Cl, cis-DMSO-[2].
On the other hand, the complex [RuIICl2(bpy-Cl2)2] [4], which contains two bpy-Cl2 ligands and two chlorido ligands, has been also synthesized. In this case the synthesis was carried out from the hydrated salt RuIIICl3·2.53H2O also in the presence of the ligand bpy-Cl2. In this case a unique isomer is obtained, the cis-Cl-[4].
The compounds obtained have been characterized in solution using spectroscopic (NMR, UV-VIS) and spectrometric (ESI-MS) techniques and in solid state by infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The redox properties of the compounds have been measured through cyclic voltammetry (CV).
Finally, the stability of the complex [2] in water dissolution containing 4% DMSO was studied by means of UV-VIS spectroscopy. The results show that the compound [2] is stable throughout 72 h and is thus a good candidate for being studied as an anticancer agent
