The irruption of Escola Nova 21 has sparked a heated debate in the Catalan educational
world on the idea of educational innovation, its potentialities and limitations. This article
presents the positioning in front of this debate by directions of educational centers and
agents promoting educational change. The objective is to present a descriptive overview
of the current state of the debate based on its protagonists. By means of a qualitative
methodology, it is presented, in a descriptive way, how the different actors understand the educational innovation, what is their function, what pedagogical and organizational
characteristics has an innovative educational centre and what are the most important determinants that affect the processes of educational change.
The main result of this research is the evidence that educational innovation has gone
media and politics’ frontline and that the various actors of the educational system position
themselves in function of their realities and interest
