Introduction: Nowadays suicide it is considered as a public health problem that affects
about one million people worldwide every year and has become the second leading cause
of death among people aged 15 to 29 years. In Catalonia during the year 2015, around
500 cases of suicide were registered, which represented 13.7% of the total suicide in
Spain. Students from university are in this age range, that’s why it has become a
population at risk. In this way, conducting a study to know the risk of suicide on the nursing
students of the University of Girona taking into account self-esteem, resilience and
academic stress will allow an assessment in this population.
Objectives: Identify the suicidal ideations and behaviors on the nursing students at the
University of Girona, as well as the relationship between self-esteem, resilience, academic
stress at the risk of suicide.
Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study of students who are studying one up to
four courses in Nursing degree during the 2017-2018 academic year. The
sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the students were analyzed, as well as
the relationship between the risk of suicide, self-esteem, resilience and academic stress.
Results: 12.1% of nursing students are at risk of suicide, and 4% have adopted a suicidal
behavior some time. Total average scores are similar in the scales of self-esteem,
resilience and academic stress, except in the risk of suicide where scores have been
higher in men. However, from the total number of students who are sufering this risk, 14
are women while 7 are men. The puntuations of suicide risk correlate negatively and
significantly with self-esteem, resilience and academic stress.
Conclusions: The results conclude that students with low self-esteem, have difficulties
adapting to and face adverse situations and suffer a high level of academic stress may
present a higher risk of suicide. Thus, identifying self-esteem as an important factor
involved in suicide risk can be useful for future prevention programs
