A doctoral thesis proposes a new model of consumer behaviour in the area of tourism. This research was developed in partnership with Romanian Academy, The World Economy Institute, with the National Foundation of Young Managers (Romania) and ASAJE Foundation (Spain). This thesis represented the work of PhD student Ingrid Rosca and professors and researchers Dr. Jaume Guia, Dr. Raquel Camprubi, Dr. Pilar Presas, being under the tutoring of Dr. Andrea Bikfalvi. The noun behaviour, the manner of conducting oneself, illustrates the main idea of the entire doctoral thesis. Along with the commercial part, the PhD dissertation is focusing on explaining how do consumers, respectively, tourists behave. And for the findings to be revealed, there was conducted an analysis on the Romanian tourists. Hence, the main research question is “Which are the main variables (social and touristic) in defining the profile of the traveller?” The thesis is structured in five chapters and two parts. First, the theoretical part extracts interesting information from academics and specialists in consumer and tourist behaviour, analysing the decision making process in the context of the rational choice. Second, the case study is based on the analysis of a questionnaire, on a sample of 5600 Romanian tourists. The results were analysed through IBM SPSS 17 statistical program. A descriptive statistics analysis was conducted. First there were investigated the socio-economical factors in determine the social profile of the individual. Hereafter, the relationship between those factors and the main preferences for an inland vacation revealed the profile of the domestic tourist. The analysis was continued by the investigation of the profile of Romanian tourists in abroad vacations. These results revealed the main differences between the inland and abroad holiday preferences. By the end of this section the analysis of the relationship between the socio-demographic factors and the preferences for both domestic and international travel variables established the main characteristics of the behavioural patterns of Romanian tourists. Based on the discovered results (analysed through preferences for type of holiday, location and accommodation, and main determinants in choosing a touristic destination), this investigation revealed the fact that Romanians became real tourists at middle age career and usually prefers low cost trips, at medium level of comfort, travelling with family at close to home destinations. An interesting fact of this research is that the model developed could be used in analysing other nationalities also, for a better defining of the concept of touristic behaviour.
