In the course of World War II, when the results of the contest were unfavourable to the forces of the axis, Franco's army –under the guise of maintaining public order– established a plan to go out on the street and occupy militarily the city of Girona, in order to ensure his domain. The order of operations included the division of the city into sectors and the use of the forces of infantry, artillery, armed police and civil guard. The public buildings, the services of water, gas and electricity, as well as communications and several dominant points of the population were included among the objectives to control ​
