The Epítome de la genealogia dels comtes de Barcelona, which heads the publication of the proceedings of the General Court in 1585, forms part of the official response to the dead end which Catalan historiography had reached following P. M. Carbonell’s criticisms of Pere Tomic, whose work represented the validation of the legendary tradition. Taking as a reference the historiographic discourse of self-liberation and to overcome the obstacles arising from the critique of P. M. Carbonell, the Epítome intended to set down the lines for a new discourse that other works were to extend upon. This is the case of the Història moral de Cathalunya of the Jesuit Pere Gil, which closely follows the lines drawn by the Epítome and, based on the methods of Aristotle’s moral philosophy and the moral theology of the time, sought to enlighten the darkest passages in the history of the Principality. Moreover, the article presents a hypothesis regarding the authorship of the Epítome primarily as a work of consensus with the evident participation of Francesc Calça in the writing of the first counts
