This article seeks to contextualize the terracotta gallery of the Catalan monarchs that decorated the great hall of the Llotja de Mar in Barcelona, an initiative of local merchants who sought to draw attention to their role in the new imperial project of Carlos V. Using entries in accounting ledgers related to the building contract and firsthand descriptions of the gallery, we reconstruct the catalogue and historiographical meaning of the iconic series of the Catalan monarchs, as well as hypothesize about the layout of the gallery in the great hall of the Llotja and its artistic conceptualization
