Cendres de la pintura: Antoni Rovira i Pau Torrent al retaule de sant Miquel d'Esparreguera (1629-1635)

The present work furnishes new patterns for de critical study of seventeenth-century painting in Catalonia, a subject, still today, enigmatic and neglected. This article surveys the artistic personalities of Antoni Rovira and Pau Torrent, and retrieves the memory of the images of the altarpiece of sant Miquel d'Esparraguera (1629-1634), which was burnt in 1936. Studying this work and his authors I wish to document the good level of the modest painting workshop operating in Catalonia, and, particularly, I wish to reflect on the enormous importance of the imported engraving as a «material» for the construction and renewal of the catalan plastic art of the period ​
