Cendres de la pintura: Antoni Rovira i Pau Torrent al retaule de sant Miquel d'Esparreguera (1629-1635)

Abstract

The present work furnishes new patterns for de critical study of seventeenth-century painting in Catalonia, a subject, still today, enigmatic and neglected. This article surveys the artistic personalities of Antoni Rovira and Pau Torrent, and retrieves the memory of the images of the altarpiece of sant Miquel d'Esparraguera (1629-1634), which was burnt in 1936. Studying this work and his authors I wish to document the good level of the modest painting workshop operating in Catalonia, and, particularly, I wish to reflect on the enormous importance of the imported engraving as a «material» for the construction and renewal of the catalan plastic art of the period

El present treball vol aportar nous materials a l'estudi de la pintura del segle XVII a Catalunya, un tema mal conegut i ple d'enigmes. Vol presentar, per exemple, les personalitats dels pintors Antoni Rovira i Pau Torrent, i recuperar amb velles imatges la memòria del retaule de sant Miquel d'Esparreguera (1629-1634) --una obra que va ser cremada el 1936--. A través de l'estudi d'aquest conjunt i dels seus autors, es vol documentar el bon nivell assolit pels obradors pictòrics de mitjana volada actius a la Catalunya de l'època i, sobretot, afegir arguments per reflexionar sobre l'enorme importància que va tenir el gravat d'importació com a «material de construcció» i de renovació de la plàstica catalana de l'època moderna
