In the following pages my intention is to analyse the theory of language present in Plato's C r a t y l u s. On the one hand, the conception of meaning of words that Plato seems to defend in this dialogue is analysed; on the other hand, it is concerned with the problem of the origins of language. These questions are put in relation to ontological and epistemological views of Plato: i.e., essentialism, the theory of reminiscence and the sophistic thesis of the impossibility of speaking with falsehood. The conclusion is that in C r a t y l u s we can find sketched the theory of language needded by Plato for his further Theory of Forms
