Mental disorders are a worldwide issue, but the daily life of those who suffer from it depends on the country they are in. Gambia is a country where mental health is very stigmatized, and is not a priority in health policies. Often, people who suffer from mental disorders are undervalued, prejudged and in some cases, abused, violating their rights and experiencing everyday discrimination by the society.
The current project pretends to elaborate a mental health awareness program addressed to Gambian adolescent population with the objective of reducing mental health stigma in this West-African country.
The study will be carried out through a mixed design, with quantitative and qualitative methodology. Regarding qualitative methodology, it will consist on different focal groups of patients, professionals and general population to obtain information about the mental health knowledge of the population. As for the qualitative methodology, a quasi-experimental study will be made through an awareness program for adolescents between 15 and 18 years through videos on YouTube every 2 months and a survey will be conducted before the program and a year later to see its effectiveness. It will start on July 2017 and will end on December 2018
