According to Locke the corpuscular theory of matter was the best explanation of the reality. Nevertheless, he did not believe that it was possible to demonstrate philosophically the truth of this claim: human beings can only achieve justified beliefs, but not knowledge, on the actual constitution of the world. For this reason, Locke, in his philosophical defense of the corpuscular hypothesis, appeals to theology: God could make possible what for human beings would be inconceivable
La teoría corpuscular de la materia era, según Locke, la mejor explicación de cómo es la realidad. Sin embargo, no creía que fuese posible demostrar filosóficamente la verdad de esta afirmación: los seres humanos sólo pueden llegar a tener creencias justificadas, pero no conocimiento, sobre la constitución real del mundo. Por esta razón, Locke, en su defensa filosófica de la hipótesis corpuscular, apela a la teología: Dios podía hacer posible lo que para los humanos sería inconcebible
