L’Albera a l’antiguitat: la frontera permeable

Abstract

The period of the Iberian settlements, characterised by few signs of clear boundaries between the two sides of the Albera mountain range, was followed by the tracing of a borderline between two provinces of the Roman Republic, visibly marked by the Pompey trophies. The route through the Albera was the former Via Herculea, now known as Via Augusta, where remains of the mansion Summus Pyrenaeus have been found. There is no archaeological evidence of defensive constructions until the late imperial period with the fortification of Les Cluses. This fortified border was accomplished during the Visigoth period and abandoned during the conquest of the Franks who established it as limit of their counties

En una etapa marcada per poques mostres de delimitacions clares entre les dues bandes de l’Albera, la que correspon a les poblacions ibèriques, succeirà la frontera entre dues províncies de la República romana, amb els trofeus de Pompeu que les delimitaven clarament. El pas de l’Albera es feia pel vell camí d’Hèrcules, esdevingut Via Augusta, del qual es coneix lamansió de Summus Pyrenaeus. No hi ha evidències arqueològiques d’estructures defensives fins època baiximperial amb la fortificació de les Cluses. Aquesta frontera fortificada, perfeccionada en època visigòtica, va ser abandonada arran de la conquesta franca, per esdevenir delimitació de comtats
