El franquisme veia en els mestres la causa de la inculcació a la població d’uns valors totalment contraris a la “España nueva”. Des del poder, des de l’“estado nuevo”, s’hi havia de posar fi i impulsar un nou magisteri que actués per adoctrinar la població. Els representants del magisteri van ser objecte d’una forta repressió. Alguns, es calcula que va ser al voltant d’un 10% del professorat català, van travessar la frontera per anar a l’exili. Els altres, una quarta part del magisteri català, van ser objecte de la Comissió Depuradora. La depuració dels mestres va suposar la incorporació a la pràctica del magisteri d’addictes al règim, els quals, juntament amb els que havien superat la depuració, van posar les bases de la “escuela nueva”. Una nova realitat que es presenta a partir dels llibres de visita d’inspecció, on es constata el fer taula rasa de la pràctica educativa anterior, l'adoctrinament i la penúria per la qual passava l’escola, reflex fidel de la població
The Franco regime considered the teaching profession the source of inculcation of values totally contrary to the “new Spain”. The authorities, the “new state” needed to put an end to this and to propel a new teaching that would serve to indoctrinate the population. The members of the teaching professionwere heavily oppressed. Some, it is calculated around 10% of the Catalan teaching staff, crossed the border into exile. The others, a fourth part of the Catalan professorate, were victims of the Cleansing Commission. The cleansing of teachers lead to the incorporation of adherents to the regime who, together with those who had passed the cleansing process, put down the foundation of the “newschool”. The new reality can be detected in the books of visiting inspection where it is reflected how the former educational practises were wiped off and where the indoctrination and shortage of the school system, a mirror image of society, becomes clear
