The fossil register shows a plentiful presence of the Ursus spelaeus during the Middle Palaeolithic in Europe. However, during the Upper Palaeolithic Period a progressive decline was registered, which inevitably broughtthe Ursus spelaeus to its extinction. In order to explain the reasons for the extinction of the Ursus spelaeus we will provide data concerning the transition between the Middle and Upper Pa/aeolithic based on two archaeological sites, the Arbreda Cave and the Ermitons Cave (Cata/onia), located in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula, one of the southern areas of distribution of this Ursidae ​
