Physical performance and hamstring injury risk factors during the off-season period in footballers: inertial flywheel versus gravity-dependent resistance training methods
Vicens Bordas, Jordi
The physical demands (high-intensity running and sprinting) of football
match-play place footballers at increased risk of hamstring injuries. Some of
the negative effects of a hamstring injury such as neuromuscular deficits and a decrease in performance are already known. While previous injury and age
are known risk factors for future hamstring injuries, their relationship with
the changes in eccentric hamstring strength and performance during the offseason
in semi-professional footballers have not been studied. Moreover, a
variety of resistance training interventions aiming at improving physical
performance and strength are available in the literature, with inertial
flywheel resistance training arising lately and providing promising results.
The thesis aimed to firstly compare the use of inertial flywheel with
gravity-dependent resistance training for improving physical performance and
thigh muscle strength and, secondly, to test how previous injury, age and the
off-season period affects physical performance and eccentric hamstring
strength in semi-professional and amateur footballers; Les demandes condicionals (carreres a alta-intensitat i esprints) dels
isquiosural en futbolistes semiprofessionals i amateurs

Groin problems in male football: beyond the time-loss approach
Esteve Caupena, Ernest
This Thesis aimed at studying the prevalence and severity and broadening the knowledge of aetiology and risk factors of groin injuries in male football. The four papers, which form part of this Thesis, are based on the same research project conducted on a cohort of amateur players from 17 Spanish teams. Variables such as information about groin pain in the previous season, pre-season short- and long-lever hip adductor squeeze strength, together with demographic and anthropometric data were collected at pre-season. Hip- and groin-related sporting function was registered at baseline, and every fourth week during the in-season, using the Sport and Recreation subscale from The Copenhagen Hip and Groin Outcome Score (HAGOS (Sport)) questionnaire. Time-loss groin injuries, registered by the team physiotherapist, in addition to self-reported groin pain, irrespective of time loss, were registered over 44 weeks to document all groin problems, and groin problems with and without time loss; Aquesta Tesi va tenir com a objectiu l'estudi de la prevalença i la severitat, i l’exemplar coneixement sobre l’etiologia i factors de risc de les lesions de l'engonal en futbolistes.

Inter-limb asymmetries and sports performance: from assessment to the application of a sport-specific iso-inertial resistance training in young athletes
Madruga Parera, Marc
The asymmetries detected in the different multi-directional sports vary in magnitude depending on the test selected. Furthermore, in the individual analysis of the different tests administered, it was observed that athlete’s lower limb preferences depended on the test. Greater asymmetries were detected in the vertical jump test, the CODD variable, and the change of direction with inertial resistance test in multidirectional sports. The change of direction with inertial resistance test also enabled us to detect asymmetries in actions that approximate the actual sport. Moreover, the results showed that asymmetries have a negative impact on performance of the jump and the change of direction, and on speed in the linear sprint and the capacity to repeat the change of direction.
Last, we were able to observe that iso-inertial training results in greater adaptations in performance and larger reductions in asymmetries than conventional cable-resistance training. We can also affirm that positive adaptations in performance caused by resistance training are not necessarily associated with reduced asymmetries; Com a síntesis d’aquest procés d’investigació, les asimetries detectades en els diferents esports multidireccionals mostren variabilitat en les magnituds segons la prova seleccionada.
