Mujahid, Omer
Modeling biological systems has always been challenging given the complexity of the processes involved in them. Experts have been employing physiological models to approximate the dynamics of biological systems; however, these models are constrained by the limitations of mathematical techniques that can only encompass part of the physical phenomena behind a biological system. Mathematical physiological models of the human glucose-insulin system are considered the gold standard of simulators in type 1 diabetes (T1D) healthcare. Though accurate to a certain degree, these models are not capable of simulating scenarios that could fully capture the real-life dynamics of a T1D patient. The underlying
cause for this phenomenon could be attributed to the numerous hidden factors that are ignored
during physiological modeling because of increasing model complexity or hurdles in their
representation. This work was carried out with a focus on accurate model approximation in T1D. The
rationale is built on the hypothesis that generic function approximators such as deep neural
networks (DNNs) have the ability to learn all that from data that cannot be modeled mathematically.
Since deep generative models (DGMs) are implemented using DNNs, they are capable of learning the underlying probability distribution of a data set. This thesis presents several methodologies based on data-driven models using DGMs for improved model approximation in T1D. Firstly, a systematic review of data-driven models for predicting hypoglycemia is conducted. After that, a methodology for data augmentation in a hypoglycemia classifier using a generative adversarial network (GAN) is developed as part of this thesis. The next work in this series focuses on the conditional synthesis of realistic BG profiles of T1D patients. Finally, building on the work performed thus far, a T1D simulation environment is developed using a sequence-to-sequence GAN (S2S GAN) that is capable of synthesizing realistic patients with T1D. The results obtained from these methods show the efficacy of DGMs for model formation in T1D. It has been demonstrated through these results that a highly precise approximation of the glucose-insulin system of patients with T1D can be obtained from data with the help of DGMs. Moreover, these models have been shown to generate novel data that is statistically
similar to real data for all the standardized glycemic metrics. Furthermore, the causal synthesis
of realistic T1D data has been shown in the work presented in this thesis.; Modelar sistemes biològics sempre ha estat un desafiament atesa la complexitat dels

The development of any process handles data. These data are generated from information that in turn generates knowledge. The ideal is that this knowledge provides the process with added value that allows it to improve, take advantage of what it has and reuse it in future processes framed of what has been learned.
Knowledge can be generated with the development of activities and dynamics, extracting it from documents or emails and from the knowledge that people have. In the case of this research, Knowledge Management allows the creation of educational material, in the context of High Abilities students, and whose purpose is to support and encourage co-creation participants, especially these students, co-creating an educational material according to their characteristics.
The co-creation of educational material involves processes that are repeated and in which, to facilitate its development, it is important to guide, communicate, interact and collaborate among the participants. In this case, the participants are High Abilities students, their teachers and their parents. Therefore, it is important not only to consider what is related to the process, but also the knowledge that both teachers and parents have about students and their academic process, along with the knowledge the process has about students, such as their personal characteristics.
High Abilities Students are those who have different abilities at a higher level than the average for people of their age, to perform in different fields. Despite this advantage, they may have various problems such as difficulty relating socially, lack of understanding for their way of thinking or not being taken into account in the development of different activities of their interest, which leads to demotivation about their educational process in general. From this, the objective is that Knowledge Management in a co-creation process helps to minimize the consequences of these problems, thus improving the motivation of these students in their academic process.
The identified problem is that there is no technological framework that allows Knowledge Management for co-creation processes with High Abilities students and that also uses the implicit knowledge that the participants in the process have (students, teachers and parents) and the characteristics of the students; El desenvolupament de qualsevol procés maneja dades.

curious and motivated to learn new things. Despite this behaviour, these students may lose interest in their learning process especially when their physical and emotional development is different from their intellectual development (desynchronises).
The main objective of this thesis is to help motivate High Ability students into their learning process make them active participants in the creation of their learning material. To achieve this we work three different areas together: High Abilities, Co Creation and Adaptation. With this union we designed a learning material co creation process adapted to High Ability student’s characteristics. In this process the student, his/her family and teacher jointly participate in the learning material co creation, which can be applied in his/her learning process; Generalmente, los individuos con Altas capacidades o superdotados muestran un desempeño espontáneo y natural en uno o más dominios.

This thesis presents the study and development of distinct data-driven techniques to support event detection, fault location, and resilience assessment towards enhancements in power systems. It is divided in three main parts as follows. The first part investigates improvements in power system monitoring and event detection methods with focus on dimensionality reduction techniques in wide-area monitoring systems. The second part focuses on contributions to fault location tasks in power distribution networks, relying on information about the network topology and its electrical parameters for short-circuit simulations over a range of scenarios. The third part assesses enhancements in power system resilience to high-impact, lowprobability events associated with extreme weather conditions and human-made attacks, relying on information about the system topology combined with simulations of representative scenarios for impact assessment and mitigation. Overall, the proposed data-driven algorithms contribute to event detection, fault location, and resilience assessment, relying on electrical measurements recorded by intelligent electronic devices, historical data of past events, and representative scenarios, together with information about the network topology, electrical parameters, and operating status.
