Globalisation has intensified uncertainty and complexity given the changes produced by the increase in unpredictable events, hazards and adversities, such as the climate emergency, social inequality, technological obsolescence and the financial, energy or health crises. Resilience has become a vital objective for cities. It enables the effects of globalisation to be confronted positively and, in this way, contributes to sustainable development in the environmental, socioeconomic and political domains. Although there are various scientific studies on resilience in the urban development area, this is not the case in the specific field of architecture. Therefore, this research proposes theorisation of resilient architecture through grounded theory based on the analysis of eight case studies selected from three European architecture studios: the Finnish studio Ilo, the Spanish cooperative of architects Lacol and the French studio Bruther.
Through a literature review of the general concept of resilience, some heuristic premises are extracted for research on resilient architecture. They are associated with the planning of indeterminacy and the evolution of dynamic systems. Three types of dynamic socio-spatial systems are specified that develop different processes over time: fragile, resistant and resilient. In addition, the practice of two architecture studios, Lacaton & Vassal and Elemental, is assessed. These are considered contemporary benchmarks that help to focus research on the selected case studies and contribute to defining the properties of resilient architecture; La globalització ha intensificat la incertesa y la complexitat davant els canvis produïts per l’augment de successos impredictibles, com ara l’emergència climàtica, la desigualtat social, l’obsolescència tecnològica i les crisis econòmiques, energètiques o sanitàries.

The community feeling associated to belonging to a neighbourhood is essential in our life quality. These emotions represent the relationship between the individual and the city.
In this sense, this doctoral thesis analyzes the social, political, and economic environment of the “Poble-sec” neighbourhood, placed at the foot of the “Montjuïc” Mountain, in the area of Barcelona. The thesis establishes the actual condition of this neighbourhood and identifies the determinants and decisive aspects that led to the urbanistic development of different areas: “Les Hortes de Sant Bertran” (a maritime sector); “Santa Madrona” and “La Satalia” (central sectors); and “La França” (west sector).
All of the areas have something in common, the coincidence of the neighbourhood development, around the middle of the s. XIX.
In this thesis, the urban development transformation of the “Poble-sec” neighbourhood has been explored. It has been done from the individual and correlated analysis of the different sectors of the neighbourhood, taking into account the different factors that have influenced the individual character of the sectors and their origins which have been representatives as the “molers”, workers from the quarries, represented in the pathway, the cross and the house of the “molers”; La identitat, associada al sentiment de pertinença a un barri, és un aspecte fonamental per a la qualitat de vida; representativa de la relació individu/ciutat.

THE GARDEN CITY. This is the name under which Eixample Malagrida (the extension district) of the city of Olot is known; this is what it was called in the only plans available to us of the project that was born in the middle of Noucentisme and was promoted by the "Americano" from Olot Manuel Malagrida i Fontanet. The authorship of these plans is assigned to the city architects Joan Roca Pinet and Josep Esteve based on the signatures they make on the partial projects carried out by each of them in 1916 and 1925, respectively. However, can we consider the garden city model valid as the basis for the most important expansion project in the contemporary history of the city of Olot? And, furthermore, does its real authorship correspond only to these two names of the architects that signed the original plans?
Questioning these historical statements is two of the main guidelines that accompany our research and lead us to look into the life and work of the project’s founder, Manuel Malagrida. This is an immersive process that also brings us to the investigation of other aspects of the project, such as its formal radial arrangement and the solid references associated with it, or the political dimension of the apparently innocuous metaphor of the discovery of America related to the second phase of the work.
Beyond the historical or referential study of the project, this work addresses other issues of a more interpretative nature. On the one hand, we explore the personal space of those families living in the neighbourhood in its time of splendour -prior to the Civil War and the "Aigat" of 1940- with the aim of analysing the capacity of the architectural projects to generate a truly domestic architecture, beyond style or conventions. And, finally, we reclaim the efficiency and sensitivity of Olot's Eixample Malagrida in terms of its contribution to reconfiguring the urban, natural and social landscape in which it is embedded; LA CIUTAT JARDÍ.

This thesis contributes to the current debate on the relationship between the participation of digital citizens in urban planning and social sustainability within the framework of the smart city concept. Recent studies have reported that smart city initiatives are failing to live up to sustainability expectations. This, in turn, opens up questions about social sustainability expectations, which require more research. This thesis is written to cast light on the importance of considering the social dimension in smart cities by emphasizing the potential role of citizen participation in urban planning. Specifically, the focus of this study was on small cities in Europe that claim to play an important role in the economic and political development of the European union and hence, should be given more attention in research. This is crucial in social sustainability research since some small cities and their disadvantaged areas are struggling to compete with cities that are able to attract wealth and development, thus reinforcing the inequality gap. This thesis aims to answer three main questions: i) Can digital citizen participation play a role in advancing social sustainability in smart cities?; ii) How can small cities prepare to introduce digital participatory planning under the umbrella of smart cities and how to assess a city’s readiness for digital participatory planning?; and iii) What are the implications of utilizing three-dimensional digital participatory planning on the participatory planning process in less-advantaged area? This study was conducted in three stages based on a collaboration with a government organization and the local citizens. Qualitative and quantitative methods were utilized. The first stage of the research was based on a systematic review of the literature. The second stage utilized qualitative semi-structured interviews and quantitative questionnaires to collect data that were then analyzed using SPSS and NVivo software. The third stage of the research was based on the implementation of a digital
